Butter Cookies for Cutouts

Butter Cookies 

Makes 3-4 dozen

This recipe is adapted from my sister-in-laws lovely cookie business.

I have changed ingredients to suit the UK market.


227 g quality, unsalted butter, softened

200 g caster sugar

1 medium egg

½ tsp vanilla paste

420 g plain flour

1 tsp baking powder

2 tbsp single cream



113 g quality butter, softened

450 g icing sugar

1/8 tsp sea salt

3-6 tbsp milk


 Variety of decorations


Cream together butter and sugar until creamy and light then add egg and paste.

Add flour and baking powder then add single cream to moisten and come together.

If it seems dry add 1 tbsp more of cream.


Chill for 2 hours

Make frosting

Cream together butter and sugar, add salt and milk.



Preheat oven to 180C or 160C fan-assisted.

Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Roll out dough to a little over ½ cm thick.

Place on trays and bake 8-12 minutes or until golden on bottom.

Cool on racks.

Decorate with frosting and sprinkles
